Nelson Marsh

Nelson is our polymath in residence, a title that he made up. He is a father of one and holds a degree in fine arts, which he does not use. Nelson comes to the Marsh Collective as a continuation of his passion for entrepreneurial and community building pursuits.

After pursuing his degree in the arts, Nelson moved back to Opelika to run for city council at the age of 22. Though the run was unsuccessful, it gave him a platform to delve deeper into the machinations of a small town than he ever had, and unearthed a passion for city codes and ordinances.

In the wake of the election, Nelson started Ampersand; Opelika’s first wine bar. Within the first year, five wines had grown to over fifty, and two hundred by the middle of the second year. At its height, Nelson’s list boasted five hundred wines by the glass. To accomplish this, Nelson developed his system for hyper-lean by the glass sales, leading to a two-thirds reduction in waste when compared to the industry average. Nelson exited the fine wines space to focus on client work and development with the company. He now teaches this system to our hospitality clients, in addition to being our go-to teacher for team leadership, and all items academic.
